Making It More Retro

Soooo, as you might assume by the title of the devlog, i'm redesigning the game's artstyle, this was made on favor for making the game be more close to ACTUAL NES games. For example: Following the 3 color per sprite limit, 8x8 sprites (even tho barry is 16x16 but it still follows the nes rules so shut up), making the game simpler, etc.

I tried different designs until landing on one that i actually liked:

The first re-design was actually in 16 bits, using the SMW palette and stuff:

I realized that it was too hard to make other poses look good so i totally scraped the 16 bit idea.At least this survived

Then i tried doing Barry a 8x8px sprite, so he would be smaller and easier to animate...

Yeeaah, it's cute but it's just too small for the gameplay style i want, i still want to use this little goober somewhere in the game anyways.

(also, the sprite is 9px tall so the implications of it if it was an actual nes game would be funny, using another separate tile of other 8x8 pixels just for the three red pixels at the top of the cap)

just look at him, that's a very handsome little fella.

Then i landed on the final design, using a 16x16 sprite:

Yeah, there's not too much to explain, it's just perfect, being inspired by the original small mario sprite, it just fit's perfectly in the game.

Oh, also, i almost forget to mention that, originally the combat style was just a lame melee punches and kicks, it just didn't feel right, then with this new design i though "how about a boomerang style combat" and ta-dah!

A Mario Odyssey Cappy attack! Very cool huh?

Anyways, i'm still thinking on a way to implement a health system, i'm thinking of a Ghost n' Goblins type health, where if you get hit once, you lose your cap, and if you get hit twice, you finally die. The thing is that i still don't know how should i make the player re-gain health.

Anyways, i don't have more stuff to show here so i think this is th- HOLY SHIT IS THAT BUTT ASS NAKED BLACK BARRY!!1!11!
